Description

Finasteride Accord 1mg (28 Tablets, 1-Month Supply)

Prescription finasteride 1mg specifically from Accord Healthcare, the UK generic manufacturer many patients request by name. Chemically identical to generic finasteride 1mg (same active ingredient at the same strength), but supplied specifically as the Accord brand for patients who prefer manufacturer continuity.

Why patients ask for Accord specifically

Finasteride 1mg is manufactured by multiple MHRA-approved generic companies (Accord, Teva, Dr Reddy's, and others). All are bioequivalent and produce the same clinical results. Some patients prefer to stay on the same manufacturer once they have started treatment, for:

  • Consistency of tablet appearance and packaging

  • Consistency of any inactive ingredients (excipients)

  • Personal preference for a UK-based generic manufacturer

If you have no manufacturer preference, our generic finasteride 1mg (84-tablet 3-month pack) offers better per-tablet value.

Accord versus generic finasteride 1mg

Accord Finasteride 1mg is the same molecule as generic finasteride 1mg. Same active, same 1mg dose, same MHRA license. The only differences are the manufacturer, the packaging and the price.

  • Same clinical effect. Both contain finasteride 1mg. Both block Type II 5-alpha reductase in the scalp. Both are dispensed under UK prescription rules. Any UK prescriber will confirm they are interchangeable.

  • Why patients ask for Accord specifically: some men were originally prescribed Accord by their GP and want brand consistency on reorder. Others have had good tolerance on Accord and prefer not to change manufacturer. Both are valid reasons.

  • Price: Accord starts at Ā£20 for 28 tablets. Our generic finasteride 1mg starts at Ā£15 for the same 28 tablet count, dropping to as low as 36p per tablet on a 12 month pack. If price is your driver, choose the generic. If brand continuity matters to you, stay on Accord.

  • Effectiveness for hair loss: identical to generic finasteride at the same dose. Neither is more or less effective than the other.

How finasteride works

Finasteride is a Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for miniaturising hair follicles in men with male pattern hair loss. A 1mg daily dose reduces serum DHT by around 70%, which slows follicle miniaturisation and lets existing follicles thicken up over time.

Finasteride does not regrow hair fully lost for years. It protects the hair you still have, thickens miniaturising follicles, and often produces modest regrowth on the crown and mid-scalp.

What to expect

  • 2 to 3 months: reduced shedding is often the first sign

  • 4 to 6 months: visible thickening and some regrowth on the crown and mid-scalp

  • 12 months: full effect. Results maintained by continued daily use

  • On stopping: any hair gained is lost over 6 to 12 months

Dosing

One 1mg tablet daily, at any time of day, with or without food. Consistency matters more than timing. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day; do not double up the next day.

Side effects

Most men take finasteride 1mg without issue. Original phase III trials reported sexual side effects in around 3 to 4% of men at 1mg daily, with a similar rate in the placebo arm.

Uncommon (roughly 1 in 100)

  • Reduced libido, usually mild

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Changes to ejaculation volume

Rare (less than 1 in 1,000)

  • Breast tenderness or enlargement

  • Mood changes (incidence unclear, still reported)

  • Persistent sexual effects after stopping treatment

When to seek urgent medical advice

  • Signs of allergic reaction: facial or lip swelling, difficulty breathing, rash

  • Unusual breast lumps or nipple discharge

  • Significant mood change or thoughts of self-harm

Who should not take finasteride

  • Women, in any circumstance

  • Anyone under 18

  • Anyone with a known allergy to finasteride

  • Anyone with severe liver disease should be reviewed carefully

Pregnancy and fertility

Finasteride can affect a male foetus. The tablets are film-coated, so simply taking finasteride does not expose a pregnant partner. The risk arises only if a pregnant woman handles a broken or crushed tablet. Store the pack securely and do not split tablets.

Combining oral finasteride with topical treatments

Finasteride 1mg oral blocks DHT at source, addressing the hormonal driver of male pattern hair loss. Many men add a topical treatment on top so they also hit the growth stimulator side.

The most common combinations for men in the UK:

  • Oral finasteride plus topical minoxidil is the classic evidence backed regimen. Finasteride blocks DHT systemically, minoxidil stimulates growth locally. See our Topical Minoxidil in TrichoSolĀ® base for a low irritation option, or the oral minoxidil 5mg for an oral only routine.

  • Oral finasteride plus a custom topical compound. If you want minoxidil, tretinoin and other actives compounded into a single 100ml bottle, our Custom Topical Solution lets your prescriber build the exact formula. Since you already take oral finasteride, keep the topical DHT free and use it for minoxidil, tretinoin, melatonin, spironolactone or other supporting actives. Never add topical finasteride or topical dutasteride to a formula while taking an oral DHT blocker.

  • Prefer a topical only approach? Our FINASOL topical finasteride delivers the same finasteride active to the scalp rather than swallowed, in a 100ml TrichoSolĀ® bottle at 3 months of daily use. This gives lower systemic DHT reduction than oral, which can suit men who had side effects on tablets.

Plateaued on finasteride? Dutasteride 0.5mg is the natural escalation. Dutasteride blocks both Type I and Type II 5-alpha reductase (roughly 90 to 98% DHT reduction versus 70% for finasteride). Switch to dutasteride, not alongside: our clinical rule is one DHT blocker at a time.

Frequently asked questions

How does finasteride work for hair loss?+

Finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone). DHT is the primary hormone responsible for male pattern hair loss. By reducing DHT levels by approximately 70%, finasteride slows hair loss and can promote regrowth.

Do I need a prescription for finasteride?+

Yes, finasteride is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK. Our GPhC-registered pharmacists can issue a prescription after you complete our online medical questionnaire, no GP visit required.

How long does finasteride take to work?+

Most men notice reduced hair shedding within 3-6 months. Visible regrowth typically appears after 6-12 months of consistent daily use. Finasteride must be taken continuously to maintain results.

What are the side effects of finasteride?+

Common side effects are uncommon but may include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or reduced ejaculate volume, affecting roughly 1-2% of users. These side effects are typically reversible upon stopping the medication.

Can I take finasteride with minoxidil?+

Yes, combining oral finasteride with topical minoxidil is one of the most effective evidence-based approaches to treating hair loss. They work through different mechanisms and complement each other well.

Can I return this item?+

Prescription and custom-compounded medicines cannot be returned once dispensed under UK pharmacy regulations. Non-prescription items may be returned within 14 days if unused and in their original packaging. See our returns policy at hairrepairclinic.co.uk/returns-policy for full details.

Is Accord finasteride the same as Propecia?+

Yes chemically. Both contain finasteride 1mg as the active ingredient. Propecia is the original branded product from Merck; Accord is one of several MHRA-approved UK generic manufacturers. Same clinical effect, Accord is significantly cheaper.

Why choose Accord specifically over generic finasteride?+

For most men, no reason. Both are bioequivalent 1mg finasteride. Patients typically ask for Accord specifically when they have already been on Accord for months and want manufacturer continuity, or when they have a personal preference for a UK-based generic manufacturer. If you have no preference, generic finasteride 1mg is cheaper per tablet.

What is the best pack size for value?+

This 28-tablet pack is a 1-month supply. For better per-tablet value, our generic finasteride 1mg comes in 84-tablet (3-month) and larger packs. If you specifically want Accord brand, this 1-month pack is the current single-manufacturer option.

Is Accord finasteride any more effective than generic finasteride?+

No. Accord and generic finasteride 1mg contain the same active at the same dose and produce the same clinical effect. Any UK prescriber will confirm they are interchangeable for hair loss treatment. The only differences are manufacturer, packaging and price. Our generic finasteride starts at £15 for 28 tablets versus £20 for Accord.

Can I use Accord finasteride with topical minoxidil or FINASOL?+

Yes for topical minoxidil. Oral finasteride plus topical minoxidil is one of the most researched combinations for male pattern hair loss: two mechanisms, DHT block plus growth stimulation. See our Topical Minoxidil in TrichoSolĀ® base, or the Custom Topical Solution if you want minoxidil, tretinoin and other actives in one 100ml bottle. Do NOT stack Accord oral finasteride with our FINASOL topical finasteride: that is doubling up on the same DHT blocker, which offers no meaningful additional benefit and increases side effect risk. Our clinical rule is one DHT blocker at a time.
